Fraud Savings

BrickStreet's Special Investigations Unit continues its efforts to identify and prosecute those injured workers, policyholders and health care providers who commit workers' compensation insurance fraud.

The SIU receives an average of 49 new cases of suspected fraud each month. Referrals are received internally primarily from claims adjusters and underwriters. Referrals also are received anonymously from external parties using BrickStreet’s Web site or our fraud hot line.

At any given time, the SIU has 73 open cases that they are actively working. And it takes approximately 48 days to complete an investigation and close a case.

The SIU has documented some impressive savings as the result of investigations completed that resulted in some type of administrative action being taken in a claim.

Calendar Year 2006 $268, 317
Calendar Year 2007 $1,813,464
Calendar Year 2008 (through May) $224, 692
Total $2,306,473

A savings of $2.3 million in two and a half years is definitely impressive. These figures confirm that we are serious in our commitment to the fight against fraud!
