In comparing the number of claims reported to BrickStreet in 2006 and 2007, there is basically little difference in volume. In 2006, 40,387 claims were reported compared to 40,551 in 2007. There is, however, a difference that cannot be identified by simply looking at the numbers. Although the claim volumes between the two years are relatively flat, there appears to be an increase in the severity of the 2007 claims with the percentage of lost-time claims for that year increasing by 21 percent.
In 2006, we accepted 46 fatality claims. Of those, 12 were the result of the Sago mine disaster. Fatal claims accepted in 2007 decreased to 35 and so far this year, we have five fatality claims accepted. Looking beyond the actual numbers reveals another interesting fact. Many of these fatalities were the result of motor vehicle accidents: 22 percent in 2006; 17 percent in 2007; and nearly all (80 percent) so far in 2008.
What all of these numbers tell us is that there remains an ongoing need for improved safety measures. Safety is the key to reducing injuries and costs, and to saving lives. Our commitment to safety continues to be a priority and our mission statement confirms that commitment - Partnering with West Virginia employers to protect their greatest asset - their employees.
