| Indemnity Benefit |
This is a monetary award that compensates an injured worker for loss of income, reduced earning capacity, or permanent residual impairment. Examples are temporary total disability and permanent partial disability benefits. |
| Industrial Council |
A five voting-member board, appointed by the governor, charged with working with the Offices of the Insurance Commissioner and the Legislature to regulate workers' compensation in West Virginia. |
| Medical Benefits |
Medically-related items, supplies, treatment and other goods that may be reasonably required to treat the worker's injury. |
| Mutual Insurance Company |
An insurance company owned by its policyholders, who share in the company's surplus earnings. Policyholders also enjoy certain privileges in nominating and electing the company's Board of Directors. (Note: Until the Surplus Note is paid in full to the State of West Virginia, BrickStreet is prohibited from paying dividends to policyholders.) |
| National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) |
The NCCI manages the nation's largest database of workers' compensation insurance information. It provides classification codes (grouping employers with similar operations into categories for purposes of determining premiums). West Virginia began using NCCI classification codes in July 2006. |
